Gills to Big Genes conversion

Hello there, first post here and I hope this category is appropriate for this question. Is there any guide/tutorial/manual that would help to convert a Gills patch to a Big Genes patch? BG has less controls (pots) so a patch utilising all 10 pots of Gills might not work?
Thanks in advance for any tips and hints.
Cheers

Hi, you’re right, this would be a good topic for a guide. Id also start with replacing all gills/ objects with their big genes/ counterparts, if they exist (like pot, button, encoder, …)

And if a gills patch uses all 10 pots maybe you could replace the two you need the least with ctrl/dial and control them externally via MIDI, or merge the dial’s value with one of Big Genes’ independent CV inputs? This way you’d have a defined value but still a way to mess it up using CV?

Thank you very much for your reply. I shall take a look at switching gills/ objects to the respective big genes/ ones. I have only started to look into this ecosystem and still finding my way about.
kind regards

Hi. As someone considering building a Big Genes myself I also had this query. How have you found it?

If you are referring to the hardware build I found it relatively straightforward. If you have some experience with soldering this should not be an issue at all. The online guide is good. As for programming the thing I am still finding my way around. I would suggest to have a look at the example patches to get a feeling for the editor and how everything works and then take it from there. I hope that helps.

got Big Genes and wanted to convert my patches from Gills to BG. the thing with Big Genes only having 4 pressable switches instead of 5 and having 8 pots + 2 encoders makes converting a bit difficult.

all my Gills patch uses the 10 knobs, but only some use the 1 encoder. yes you can map certain parameters to CV-X & CV-Y, but if a patch uses MultiPot, it would be impractical to patch CV inputs into MultiPot input. (unless you like sample and hold)

controlling the dial via MIDI is a good idea, but still looking for other solutions. a guide would be really helpful.

Maybe scroll through the pages using the left encoder? You’d lose the LED feedback for the pages but could maybe simulate it using the top right LEDs

since there are 10 pot controls for Gills patches, I used all 8 pots and 2 encoders on BG for the 10 controls.
