Phase distortion anyone?

Hello. I’ve just finished building my Big Genes kit and it worked first time! I filmed most of it so will probably upload a video of the build on Youtube at some point.. Anyway, I’m loving compiling a list of patches on the SD card but one of my favourite synthesis techniques is phase distortion. I can’t find any objects or pre-made Casio CZ type patches anywhere. Do they exist? TIA, Psy

Hi! There is a folder in the community library that seems to be dedicated to PM. tiar/osc/PM… There are also some help files. There are probably some examples of PM synthesizers in Library/community/tiar/synths and Help/Library/community/tiar. I haven’t looked into it much because I have a Casio VZ10m. :slightly_smiling_face:

Smashed Transistor (tiar) has really done a great job for the community. I recommend checking out his recent project. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3n_w90KsmM

So PM stands for phase distortion? A lot of these objects have no description which makes it difficult to know what’s what. Thanks for the heads up though.

I think Phase Modulation (PM) and Phase Distortion (PD) are slightly different.

With PM the modulator is free running, with PD the modulator is hard synced to the carrier.

So (as long as the frequencies of the modulator and carrier are not changing) with PD every cycle of the carrier will be modulated exactly the same way, with PM every cycle of the carrier will probably be modulated differently.

OK, that makes sense. I think I need to play with this with a scope.. Cheers, Psy
